Sea Island, Ga. – The University of Kentucky men’s golf team advanced three spots in the final round of the 2002 Southeastern Conference Championship on Sunday, April 21, to claim eighth place. The Wildcats shot a team-low 288 in the final round to make their move and claim the best finish for a UK squad since 1991.
Senior John-Gordon Beckett led the Cats in his final SEC Championship. The Ashville, N.C., native finished the tournament in a tie for 12th place after firing a final-round 69. Freshman John Holmes also pulled out a Top 25 finish with his final-round 74. Other UK finishes included junior Andy Dustman and Philip Schardein in a tie for 33rd place and junior Ryan Coyne in 59th place.
Auburn walked away with the team title, while Florida’s Camilo Benedetti took home medalist honors for the second time in his career.
The Wildcats will take some time off before next competing in the Atlanta Intercollegiate on May 9-10.
