Notes and Quotes — Here are some observations made by Coach Guy Morriss following Kentucky’s Tuesday afternoon practice at the Nutter Training Facility:

*Sophomore free safety Travis Atwell has a swollen elbow. X-rays showed no injury, but Atwell had an MRI test that will be evaluated on Wednesday. Atwell will be eligible to play in the 2002 season as a sophomore. He practiced with the Wildcats during the 2001 season as a transfer from Toledo. “It is important to get in-state kids,” Coach Morriss said of Atwell, who was “Mr. Football” in Kentucky as a high school senior in 1999. “Travis has been really coming on for us in practice.”

*”(Quarterback) Jared Lorenzen has played very well this spring,” Morriss said. “He’s taking care of business in the classroom and has been a leader with the team.”

*Wide receiver Derek Abney has a slight hamstring strain and is day-to-day. Abney does not practice on Tuesdays because of his class schedule.

*”(Cornerback) Antoine Huffman made some nice plays in the scrimmage. Muhammad Abdullah also made some nice plays. He is pushing Quentus Cumby (at free safety),” Morriss said.

*Who else looked good on the scrimmage film? “Our defensive tackles, Dewayne Robertson, Jeremy Caudill, and Ellery Moore. Robertson couldn’t be blocked,” Morriss said. “We also got good play from our ends, Otis Grigsby, Trey Mielsch, and Raymond Fontaine. Raymond has to get stronger to be able to play the run, but he can help us in pass-rush situations. He also has the speed to play on special teams.”

*How is sophomore outside safety Mike Williams developing? “Mike Williams is a hitter,” Morriss said. “He’s an aggressive kid. You have to tone him down. He wants to whack our guys.”
