Huntington, W. Va. – Freshman John Holmes led the Wildcats with a first-place finish as the University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished the Marshall Invitational in fourth-place on Saturday, April 6 at the Guyan Golf and Country Club. Holmes and the Golf Cats had impressive performances in the 20-team, 104-player tournament.

Holmes, a Campbellsville, Ky., native, shot 71’s across the board to become the only player to shoot even-par in the tournament. His three-day total of 213 was four strokes better than his closest competitor. Holmes’ first-place finish was his second in as many weeks. He also took the individual title at the Johnny Owens Invitational in Lexington last weekend.

Other UK scores included senior Philip Schardein with a 223, junior Andy Dustman with a 227, freshman Mark Blakefield with a 229 and junior Ryan Coyne with a 232.

The Wildcats will look to carry their recent momentum into the Southeastern Conference Championships on April 19-21. The 2002 SEC Championships will be held in Sea Island, Ga., at the Seaside Golf Course.
