Fayetteville, Ark. – The 13th-ranked University of Kentucky women’s tennis team picked up another impressive win in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday, March 29 as it cruised past Arkansas with a 7-0 victory. With the win the Wildcats improved to 13-4 while the Lady Backs fell to 6-11.
The Cats swept the doubles competition to set the tone for the match. The nation’s 7th-ranked team of Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten rolled their way to an 8-0 win on court one. Leigh Bradwell and Lauren Rookledge, the country’s 50th-ranked duo, and the junior pair of Amy Trefethen and Jill Buckley also picked up victories to round out the doubles sweep.
It was all Wildcats in singles action as well, with UK winning five of the six courts in straight sets. Senior Shannon Stafford reentered the lineup for the Cats in impressive fashion. Stafford, who has battled an elbow injury for most of the season, stepped back into the No. 6 position to register a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win over the Lady Backs’ Christian Kincannon.
“This was a great team effort today,” Coach Mark Guilbeau said. “We didn’t have any matches scheduled last weekend and it would have been easy to come out and play flat. Today, this team came out focused with a lot of intensity and picked up a good win.”
The Wildcats will continue their SEC road swing when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., on Sunday, Mar. 31 to battle the LSU Tigers. The match is slated to begin at noon.
