FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Kentucky junior Hunter Spencer finished third in the mile at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., this weekend. Spencer’s time of 4:02.93 was a personal best and the third-fastest time in school history, and it earned him the second All-America honor of his career. In doing so, he was the top American finisher and helped UK’s men claim 23rd place at the championships.
Along with Spencer, three other UK athletes earned All-America honors. Jeff Chakouian secured his second nod in the shot put with a seventh-place throw of 63-02.25, while sophomore David Freeman and junior Chad Johnson earned the honors in the men’s 800 meters, finishing ninth and 11th, respectively.
The men’s distance medley relay team of juniors Jack and Thomas Morgan, Johnson and Freeman finished 12th, while junior Simidele Adeagbo finished 14th in the women’s triple jump with a leap of 40-03.50. Also competing for the Cats was sophomore Beth Heimann in the women’s 800 meters.
The track teams return to action on Tuesday, March 12, when they travel to Long Beach, Calif., to open the outdoor season at the Long Beach Classic. The competition runs through Sunday, March 17.
