LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky softball team will return to the field Friday, Feb. 15, for the opening round of the Fast Pitch Express College Classic hosted by the University of Texas-San Antonio. This will be the first time the Wildcats have traveled to San Antonio for a tournament.
The Wildcats (2-3), who opened the season with a third-place finish in the Fun in the Sun Tournament in Miami, Fla., Feb. 1-3, will face six teams over the weekend. The Wildcats will open up with Purdue (2-3) on Friday at 10 a.m. CT, followed by a 3 p.m. CT game with Bethune-Cookman (3-7). UK will also face USA Today/NFCA preseason No. 17 Southwest Texas (1-7), Texas (3-4), who is receiving votes in the preseason poll, host UTSA (1-7) and Wichita State (0-0).
“We are excited to get back out on the field after the way we finished up in Miami,” UK Coach Beth Kirchner said. “We will be playing two top-25 teams on the last day, which will give us some innings against some very good competition.”
After one weekend of play, senior Beth Fogle leads the offensive attack (.556 BA, 3-3 SB) while junior hurler Morgan Marr (1-2, 4.10 ERA) has been a force in the circle, throwing 13.2 innings and pitching a three-hit shutout in UK???sup>TMs 12-0 victory over Illinois State in the Fun in the Sun Tournament consolation game.
