Both the UK men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Cincinnati and were beaten by Indiana in dual meets Saturday at the Lancaster Aquatic Center in Lexington, Ky. It was the last home contest of the season for the Cats. The men’s team (3-5, 1-4 Southeastern Conference) soundly defeated Cincinnati 180-56 and lost to Indiana 129-113. The women (3-6, 1-5 SEC) beat Cincinnati 177-58 and were defeated by IU 152-91.
Freshman Marci Vrooman had a big day for the women’s squad, winning both the 500 freestyle (4:56.99) and the 200 freestyle (1:51.32). Sophomore Amanda Bourgeois fared well coming in second to Vrooman in the 200 freestyle (1:52.36) and coming in fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:03.15).
In the 200 backstroke, the Wildcats had three consecutive finishes with sophomore Shawna Sechrist’s second-place finish (2:02.32) leading the way. Freshman Jessica Siegele (2:07.76) and senior Sarah Carter (2:07.90) were the next to touch the wall. Carter also posted a third-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.08.
In the men’s lanes, sophomore Joey Faltraco had an impressive day, winning the 200 backstroke (1:47.30) and placing second in the 200 IM (1:55.55). Junior Roger Watkins (20.84) and sophomore Daniel Wimer (20.93) were second and third, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Freshman Daniel Cruz had a good meet, placing second in the 200 freestyle (1:40.44) and third in the 100 freestyle (46.29) behind teammate Fernando Barros (45.81).
In the 200 butterfly, junior Matt Nilson (1:50.83) touched the wall in second place just ahead of junior Eddie Clement (1:51.48).
In the diving well, the men fared very well as Aaron Kirkpatrick won both the one-meter event with a score of 345.85 and the three-meter with a score of 330.70. Junior Clayton Moss followed closely, placing second in both events with scores of 336.65 (one-meter) and 329.40 (three-meter). Freshman John Collier had his best meet of his college career placing in the top three for the first time this season. He was third in the one-meter event with a score of 274.30.
For the women, freshmen Alison Riccobono and Trisha Tumlinson were first and second, respectively, in the three-meter event with scores of 297.65 and 271.40 defeating a tough IU squad.
“I was very pleased with our squad,” said Diving Coach Mike Lyden. “Alison came out and got her best score by 40 points. It was great to see her get her first win.”
Next up for the Cats is the SEC Championships on February 20-24 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
