The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team is picking up where they left off in the fall with another impressive performance in its first competition of 2002. Several Wildcats have advanced to the late rounds of the nation’s longest running collegiate tennis tournament, The Milwaukee Tennis Classic at Marquette University.
Junior Sarah Witten advanced to the semifinals of the singles draw with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Marquette’s Alicia Pillay and a straight sets win over 70th-ranked Jennifer McGaffigan of Illinois in the quarterfinals. Witten will battle for a spot in the championship match on Saturday, Jan. 12, at 11 p.m.
Doubles competition also saw the Cats fare well. Juniors Amy Trefethen and Jill Buckley, along with the tandem of senior Lauren Rookledge and junior Leigh Bradwell reached the quarterfinals and will look to continue their stellar doubles play as the competition continues on Saturday.
Both singles and doubles play will continue throughout the weekend on the campus of Marquette University. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Jan. 13.
