LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky softball student-athletes will take a few days off from on-field practice this week in order to participate in the CHAMPS Life Skills Program of Excellence on Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 28 and 29.
The first seminar the team will attend is the Alcohol & Drug Education program. The program, which is a requirement for every UK student-athlete, brings in campus and community professionals who provide alcohol and drug education information designed to help student-athletes make responsible and healthy decisions. Guidelines for detecting addictions and resources for interventions are shared.
The second program will be Career Planning and Preparation. This workshop provides in-depth information pertaining to all aspects of preparation for a career after graduation and is directed by the Career Services Staff.
“I am very much a proponent our athletes being students first,” UK Coach Beth Kirchner said. “Programs such as these help them grow as people and mature into the adults I know they are capable of becoming.”
To close out the week, the UK softball team will celebrate Women In Sports Day on Saturday, Dec. 1. The team will attend the UK-Miami (Fla.) women’s basketball game and hand out 2002 team posters prior to tip-off on the concourse of Memorial Coliseum. Game time is 7 p.m.
