KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Both the UK men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were defeated by LSU and Tennessee in dual meets Friday at the UT Student Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn. With the losses, both the men and women drop to 0-4 (0-4 SEC). The women were defeated 164.50-82.50 by LSU and 143-100 by Tennessee. The men fell 136-105 to the Tigers and 124-113 by the Volunteers.
Sophomore Amanda Bourgeois had a big day for the women’s squad, placing second in the 200 freestyle (1:53.61) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:05.09). Senior Carolyn Rader collected a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:59.87) and a third-place finish in the 50 freestyle (25.05). Chrissy Miller continued to impress as the freshman clocked a 52.86 in the 100 freestyle and a 10:15.86 in the 1000 freestyle, finishing second in both events.
“Chrissy Miller had a great day,” said Coach Gary Conelly. “We thought she was going to be a good swimmer, but she could turn out to be a great swimmer when it is all said and done.”
In the 200 backstroke, the Wildcats posted three consecutive finishes with sophomore Shawna Sechrist’s third-place finish (2:05.50) leading the way. Freshman Jessica Siegele (2:08.83) and sophomore Jenaca Pumphrey (2:09.50) were the next two swimmers to touch the wall.
Sophomore Kendra Trahan was equally impressive to the UK coaching staff as she clocked a 2:26.70 in the 200 breaststroke for a fifth-place finish and 2:15.10 in the 200 IM for a seventh-place finish.
In the men’s lanes, freshman Daniel Cruz picked up where he left off from the SEC East Challenge, giving the Cats a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle (47.59) and a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:43.90). Junior Eddie Clement collected the first win on the day for the Aqua Cats, touching the wall in 1:53.26 in the 200 butterfly while teammate sophomore Joey Faltraco was the first to finish in the 200 backstroke (1:49.17).
Senior David Kuendig also had a solid afternoon, placing second (4:40.74) in the 500 freestyle and fourth (9:42.72) in the 1000 freestyle.
In the diving well, senior Aaron Kirkpatrick had a very solid meet, winning the one-meter event with a score of 335.55, which topped Phillip Jones of UT, a Junior World Champion. Kirkpatrick placed second on the three-meter (312.15). Junior Clayton Moss also scored well, placing third in both the one- (317.95) and three-meter (308.50).
“I was pleased with the way the men performed,” said Diving Coach Mike Lyden. “Aaron competed hard today, and that is what he needs to do in order to win.”
The Cats will return home for their next dual meet, hosting intra-state rival Louisville at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
