No. 24 KENTUCKY SHUTOUT BY No. 19 TENNESSEE IN TWO OVERTIMES
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Tennessee (7-4-0/3-1-0 Southeastern Conference) won for the first time at Kentucky (8-5-0/2-3-0 SEC) in Southeastern Conference women’s soccer action on Sunday, shutting out the Wildcats 1-0 in double overtime at the UK Soccer Complex.
“If you make crucial mental errors at this level of play, it will cost you games as it did us today,” UK assistant coach Tim Bennett said. “We had four or five chances early and could not capitalize. Missing easy scoring opportunities is just as bad as giving up goals.”
After a scoreless first period, the teams battled it out on the offensive end as Kentucky sent 12 shots on UT goalie Cori Stevens, while the Lady Volunteers blasted 14 on UK goalkeeper Beth Wells in the second half. UT and UK combined for 28 saves with Tennessee posting one team save, while the Cats assisted Wells with five. Senior midfielder Annie Gage tied the UK single-game shot mark with 10, holding the record with junior Keri Boyce who sent 10 shots against South Carolina in last year’s 5-1 win on Oct. 8, 2000.
Both teams failed to dent the net in the first overtime period with UT taking four shots to UK’s one. Junior forward Kim Patrick recorded the game-winning goal at the 117:57 point of double overtime as she knocked the ball past Wells off a rebound from freshman midfielder Keeley Dowling.
The goal was the second game-winner of the season for Patrick, and her seventh consecutive goal-scoring performance, setting the UT mark for consecutive games scored. The 117:57 mark is also the latest time the Lady Vols scored to win a match, improving their overall record to 2-4-0 against the Wildcats.
“Definitely going 2-0 has set our team back on the positive track after losing a tough one at Auburn last week,” Patrick said. “It was battle out there for both teams, but we never quit and kept working for our chance to win it – it was hard-fought game and a huge win for us.”
Kentucky will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 19 as it travels to Ole Miss for a SEC match at 8 p.m.
