GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams closed out the 2001 Southeastern Conference East Challenge on Sunday, Oct. 14 by falling to the Florida at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center. The women’s team was downed 128-93 by the Gators while the men lost 129-110.
For the women, (0-2, 0-2 SEC) freshman Xenavee Pangelinan (2:07.65) and junior Emily Johnston (2:09.62) scored big for the Cats, placing second and third respectively in the 200 butterfly. Freshman Chrissy Miller took home first place in the 500 freestyle (5:01.44) and a third place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:52.73) while classmate Marci Vrooman placed third in the 100 freestyle (53.42).
Sophomores Shawna Sechrist (2:04.00) and Jenaca Pumphrey (2:08.68) and freshman Jessica Siegele (2:11.42) were the top finishers in the 200 backstroke. A trio of freshmen, Chrissy Miller, Cami Miller (5:15.48) and Caitlin Muldoon (5:15.49) went 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle. Sechrist also placed second in the 200 backstroke (2:04.00).
On the men’s side (0-2, 0-2 SEC), junior Roger Watkins (21.45) and sophomore Daniel Wimer (21.72) placed second and third, respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Wimer followed that up winning the 100 freestyle (47.62).Sophomore Joey Faltraco was the top finisher for the Wildcats in the 200 freestyle, placing second (1:44.16) and again placing second in the 200 backstroke (1:52.03). Junior Cody Nath placed third (1:56.75) in the 200 backstroke. Junior Eddie Clement placed third in the 200 IM (1:56.49).
The Cats swept the 200 butterfly as freshman Daniel Cruz (1:53.31), Clement (1:53.42) and junior Matt Nilson (1:57.59) went 1-2-3.
Senior David Kuendig placed second in the 500 freestyle (4:45.41) and third in the 1000 freestyle (10:00.21).
The teams will return to the pool on Friday, October 19 as they travel to Tennessee to take on the Volunteers and LSU at 11 a.m.
