University of Kentucky men’s soccer player Antti Peltonen was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week on September 25. He is the second Cat to receive such an award after teammate Ilkka Jantti received the same honor from College Soccer News on Sept. 9.
Peltonen, who also was just named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, tallied three goals in UK’s two conference-opening matches. The Kokkola, Finland, native, entered the two contests with just one assist and no goals but exited with three goals, including two game-winners, and another assist. His strong offensive efforts helped guide UK to a 3-1 win over Western Michigan and a 4-0 triumph over Northern Illinois. The wins moved the Cats into first place in the MAC at 2-0-0, while his three goals tied him for first on the team.
In addition, Peltonen was named the PNC Bank Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The junior journalism major has been a member of the Southeastern Conference Honor Roll since the 2000-01 academic year. He has been on the University of Kentucky Dean’s List three times since the 1999 fall semester and was a member of the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll last semester with a perfect grade point average.
