Cross Country

Sept. 28, 2001

The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29, when they travel to Chicago, Ill., for the Lakefront Invitational.

The teams have not seen action since the season-opening Woodford County Cross Country Trials, a home meet in Versailles, Ky. Both squads grabbed a win in the meet, with the men beating out both Eastern Kentucky and Louisville, while the women tied EKU for the win and handled Louisville easily.

Junior Hunter Spencer captured the men’s individual title with his time of 16:00.00 in the 5k race, while sophomore Caity Phillips easily won the women’s two-mile run with her time of 11:36.30. The Cats were scheduled to run in the Western Kentucky Old Timer’s Classic on Sept. 15, but due to the national tragedy of Sept. 11, all Southeastern Conference athletic competition was canceled for the week.

The women’s 5k race gets underway at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday with the men’s 8k following at 11:45 a.m. CT.
