No. 23 KENTUCKY TRAVELS TO FACE MICHIGAN, MICHIGAN STATE
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The 23rd ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team (2-0-0/1-0-0 Southeastern Conference) will travel to Big Ten territory this weekend as it faces Michigan on Friday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. and will complete the weekend slate at Michigan State on Sunday, Sept. 9 with a 1 p.m. match with the Spartans.
Michigan (0-2-0/0-0-0 Big Ten), ranked 10th this week in the Great Lakes Region by Soccerbuzz.com, played two matches in the Cal Invitational last weekend, dropping a 3-2 contest to Loyola Maramount (8/31) and losing to California, 4-2 (9/2). UM leads the overall series with UK, 2-1-1. In their last meeting, the Wildcats defeated the Wolverines, 1-0, in two overtimes in the SEC/Big Ten Challenge hosted by Kentucky on Oct. 31, 1999. Junior midfielder Keri Boyce scored the game-winning goal at the 112:07 mark with a 7-yard shot to seal the win for the Wildcats.
“It was a hard fought game two years ago and they have players on their team that have not forgotten about that game,” UK Coach Warren Lipka said. “Although 0-2 this season, Michigan made the NCAA Tournament last year and they are a very talented team. I know Coach (Debbie Blekin) Rademacher will have her team prepared and ready to battle us on Friday.”
Michigan State is off to a 1-0-1 start after shutting out Western Michigan, 2-0, in its opener at home on Aug. 31, and tying Bowling Green, 1-1, on Sept. 2 even though it outshot BGSU, 29-3. Before hosting the Wildcats at Old College Field on Sunday, MSU will play host to the Dayton Flyers (1-1-0) on Friday.
The Wildcats, currently ranked No. 23 nationally by Soccerbuzz.com, debuted at No. 24 in the National Soccer Coaches Association/adidas Coaches Poll this week. UK is also ranked at No. 3 in the Great Lakes region by Soccerbuzz.com, with Notre Dame (2-0-0) and Illinois (2-0-0) preceding the Wildcats.
