No. 25 KENTUCKY SCORES TWICE IN SECOND HALF TO DEFEAT MARSHALL
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 25 ranked University of Kentucky women’s soccer team scored twice in the second half to hold off Marshall, 2-1, at the UK Soccer Complex on Friday night, Aug 31.
The Wildcats, currently ranked No. 25 nationally by Soccerbuzz.com, surrendered the game’s first goal at the 58:32 mark of the second half to Marshall’s Kelly Posey. UK answered at the 70:11 mark when senior midfielder Susie Ledzianowski kicked in a 30-yard shot in the upper right of the MU net to tie the game. Earning a start in her first game as a Wildcat, freshman Kathy Fulk sealed the win for Kentucky by denting the net at the 78:26 point, earning the game-winning goal and the first of her career.
“Keri (Boyce) sent the ball in and there was a Marshall player right in front of me,” Fulk said. “We were both fighting for position and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. A win is a win but we have to play much better as a team to beat Vanderbilt on Sunday.”
The Wildcats will complete the weekend slate at Vanderbilt on Sunday, Sept. 2 in their first SEC competition of the season. Last year, the Cats defeated the Commodores, 3-2, in double overtime as junior midfielder Keri Boyce kicked in the game-winner to seal the win on Aug. 27, 2000. The Commodores defeated UT-Chattanooga, 4-0, in their season opener also on Friday night.
“We have to come out and play with the intensity we had in the second half for the entire game against Vanderbilt or we will be 0-1 in the Southeastern Conference quickly,” UK Coach Warren Lipka said. “I’ll take the win and it’s always nice to start your season in the “W” column, but we have until Sunday at 2 p.m. to correct our mistakes and learn to play for an entire 90 minutes.”
Kentucky (1-0-0) and Vanderbilt (1-0-0) are scheduled for a 2 p.m. game time on Sunday.
