Coaching Highlights

* Has coached the Wildcats to one NCAA Championship, three SEC regular-season titles and three SEC Tournament Championships in four years. In his 10-year career, Smith has won five regular-season league titles, three in the SEC, two in the Missouri Valley Conference. * In the SEC Tournament, he’s an amazing 13-3 (81.3%), having won three out of the last four tournaments after guiding Georgia to the final game in `97. * This past season, Smith also captured a share of the SEC Eastern Division crown, his third in the last four years and the second straight. * In his first UK season, the Cats won the NCAA title, the SEC regular-season championship, the league tournament title, the Eastern Division crown, and the regional title. He was named 1998 National Coach of the Year by Basketball Weekly and the Black Coaches Association and co-SEC Coach of the Year by the AP. Following the season, he was presented with the Winged Foot Award and the Victor Award for his coaching success and he was named Parent of the Year by Parent Magazine. * Previously, he had won Missouri Valley Conference titles and MVC Coach of the Year honors at Tulsa in 1994 and `95 after posting identical 15-3 records in league play. * Smith has coached six of his last eight teams to at least the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tourney — three at Kentucky, two at Tulsa and one at Georgia — and recorded the first back-to-back 20-win seasons in UGA history. He’s made eight consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including this season.

Smith Season Notes

Sweet 16 For the sixth time in eight seasons Tubby Smith led his team to the NCAA Tournament’s regional semifinals. Smith accomplished the feat his last two seasons at Tulsa, his first at Georgia and three of the four years at Kentucky. In `98, he led the Wildcats to their seventh national title and in `99, came within seven points of returning UK to the Final Four for the fourth consecutive year.

OTS Loves March Madness Coach Tubby Smith is an impressive 22-5 in the month of March since taking over the Wildcats’ program. He’s 9-1 in the SEC Tournament, 12-3 in the NCAA Tournament and has split with Florida in the final regular season game the past two years.

Outstanding Averages Tubby Smith, who this season captured his 100th UK win and the 225th in his career, has averaged 27.5 wins per year at UK, 23.4 wins per season as a head coach the last decade.

Second Fastest to 100 Tubby Smith reached 100 wins at UK quicker than any other coach except Hall of Famer Adolph Rupp. In just 130 games, Smith captured his 100th victory in only his fourth season when the Cats beat Florida, 71-70, on Feb. 6 in Lexington. The following are the number of games it took each coach to reach 100 UK victories.

Trademark Defense In the Tubby Smith Era — 1998-present, 143 games — only 11 teams have shot 50.0% or better from the field against the Wildcats. Even more remarkable, Indiana has accomplished the feat four times against the Cats, including the Hoosiers’ loss to UK in December. Overall, it happened three times in `98 (Indiana, Louisville and Florida), twice in `99 (Pitt and Louisville), twice last season (Indiana and Florida) and four times this season. Indiana, Alabama, Florida and Southern Cal all pulled the trick in 2000-01. UK owns a 2-9 record in those games. During the Smith Era, UK opponents have combined to shoot less than 40% in three of the four years. This year, 17 of the 34 UK opponents shot below 40%. Prior to Smith’s arrival, the last time UK opponents shot below 40% for the season was 1964 (39.5%). Here’s a look at the annual defensive FG percentage since Smith’s arrival: Year Opp. FG% 1998 38.4% 1999 38.1% 2000 39.0% 2001 40.5%

Smith Named League’s Favorite Sports Illustrated presented its “Players’ Choice Awards” from a preseason poll of players in each conference for its college basketball issue last November. One of the questions asked in the unscientific poll was, “Opposing coach you’d most like to play for?” Tubby Smith captured 33% of the vote, enough to earn the top nod in the SEC. Claimed one unidentified voter: “It seems like he’s the type of coach who gets on you but at the same time gives you freedom on the court. He disciplines you but also lets you do your thing.”

Overtime Success For the first time since arriving at Kentucky four seasons ago, Coach Tubby Smith suffered an overtime loss when UCLA captured a 97-92 win over the Cats in the consolation game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic in New York. The loss dropped Smith’s UK overtime record to 7-1. UK won two overtime games in `00, including a thrilling 85-80 double-overtime win over St. Bonaventure in the NCAA Tournament. In 1999, Kentucky won three overtime games under Smith’s tutelage. En route to the `98 NCAA title, the Wildcats won two OT games. Previously, the Cats had lost seven of their last eight overtime games. Overall, UK is 44-34 in overtime games, dating back to Feb. 12, 1907. Smith is 15-4 in overtime games during his 10-year coaching career. He was 2-1 at Georgia and 6-2 at Tulsa. In double-OT, he’s 3-1 (1-0 at UK, 2-1 at Tulsa).

Prestigious Position Tubby Smith is no doubt one of the nation’s top coaches. In that role, Smith was selected to serve on the NCAA Committee to study basketball issues. Smith is one of several active coaches participating, including Mike Krzyzewski of Duke and Oregon’s Ernie Kent.
