Sophomore Rita Adams inked 12 second half points while freshmen Stephanie Stoglin and SeSe Helm combined for 20 points apiece in the final two quarters, to overcome a 39-26 half-time deficit and defeat Lyon A.L.G.M, 85-69, on Thursday, May 10, in Lyon, France.
The Wildcats (2-0 in Europe) trailed most of the first half after Lyon came out on fire, shooting 44 percent in the first half, compared to UK’s 34 percent. The Cats improved their shooting to 60 percent in the second half, holding Lyon to only 44 percent to take the lead 66-64 with four minutes remaining in the game. UK then went on a 12-0 run to pull ahead 76-65 late in the fourth quarter. The Cats never trailed again and held on for the victory.
“We didn’t take care of the ball in the first half and were turning it over way too much,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox said. “I thought we really started to come together in the second half, but we were playing really timid at first.”Helm led the Wildcats in scoring for the second straight game in their 11-day tour of Europe, charting a game-high 19 points. Junior LaTonya McDole charted an impressive 16 rebounds and eight points as the Cats dominated Lyon on the boards, 49-19. Adams tallied 15 points, four assists, five steals and eight rebounds while freshmen Stoglin and Kristin Connolly charted 13 and 10 points respectively in the UK win.
The Cats will be back in action on Saturday, May 12 versus Sion Helios BBC at 6 p.m. in Montreaux, Switzerland.
