LOUISVILLE, Ky.-The University of Kentucky softball team downed in-state rivalLouisville, 3-2 and 4-2, Wednesday evening at U of Ls Ulmer Field. With thesweep the Wildcats avenged a loss suffered at the hands of the Cardinalsearlier this season in the UKIT.
In the opener, Kentucky threatened in the top of the first inning when NikkiJones bunted for a base hit with one out and Lyndsey Angus drew a walk, but UKstranded the runners when Angie Dal Pozzo and Tiffany Kruse struck out.Louisville scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first whenColleen Coughlin scored from third on a wild pitch from UK hurler Morgan Marr.
The Wildcats answered with three runs in the top of the second inning.Kwiatkowski was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to force in Eilertson with thefirst run. On the next play the Cardinals tried to get Jen Howland at the platebut the U of L catcher pulled her foot of the plate too soon, allowing Howlandto score. Angus then drew her second walk of the game to score Beth Fogle,pushing the third run across for UK.The Cardinals managed to cut the deficit to one run by scoring in their lastat-bat, but could get no closer.
Morgan Marr scattered eight hits, all singles, to go to 15-11 on the season forUK.UK freshman pitcher Monique Lovell had a no-hitter going until the bottom ofthe fourth inning when U of Ls Coleen Coughlin beat out an infield it for asingle and came around to score one out later.
The Wildcats evened the score in the top of the fifth inning when Angus singledto right center and came around to score on Dal Pozzo double to the fence inleft-center field.
UK added two more runs in the sixth inning as Eilertson scored the go-ahead runwhen Cardinals pitcher Jessica Rak threw the ball away. Lovell scored aninsurance run on Nikki Jones single to left field.
Kentucky scored another run in the top of the seventh inning when Friberg ledoff with a walk and scored on Lovells single.
Louisville added a run in the bottom of the seventh on four singles to set thefinal margin at 4-2.
Lovell recorded her fourth consecutive win for the Wildcats. The victoriesgave the Wildcats a season-high four-game win streak and UK pulled to .500 forthe first time since mid-March.
The Cats (24-24) return to Southeastern Conference action with a three-gameseries at No. 5 (USA Today/NFCA) LSU beginning with a noon doubleheaderSaturday.
