The University of Kentucky softball team crushed the Morehead State Eagles, 8-0 and15-0, in a Wednesday evening doubleheader at the UK Softball Complex.

The Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opening game andnever looked back. Senior Leslie Kwiatkowski opened the home first inning by drawinga walk, stealing second base, and scored as Lyndsey Angus’ hard hopper went pastEagle shortstop Jonti Robinson. Angus scored the ‘Cats second run of the game assenior Tiffany Kruse reached base on a fielder’s choice. Junior Andy Eilertson drovehome the third run with a two-out single to right field that plated Angie Dal Pozzo, whohad singled to left two batters earlier.

UK struck for three runs again in the second inning as Junior Beth Fogle single to leftfield, stole second, and scored Kwiatkowski doubled to the gap in left center. Dal Pozzothen doubled with two outs, scoring Kwiatkowski. Dal Pozzo stole third and scored onan error by MSU catcher Vanessa Higgins.

Kentucky scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning asLyndsey Angus doubled home Nikki Jones, who scored all the way from first on the hit.Angus later scored on an error by third baseman Amy Wilkinson to make the score 8-0.The Wildcats’ defense held Morehead State scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inningand the game was called due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Sophomore hurler Morgan Marr picked up her 13th win of the season.In the nightcap UK recorded season-highs for hits and runs scored as the Wildcatsexploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Angus drilled her second home runof the season in the inning, driving in three of the runs. Dal Pozzo tripled and homered inthe first inning as 16 UK batters came to the plate. The ‘Cats tacked on two more runsin the third inning and one more in the fourth to set the final margin. Freshman pitcher Monique Lovell recorded her second career win as a Wildcat. Jones increased her hitting steak to 10 games by going 4-7 on the day, including atriple. Dal Pozzo was 4-5 for the two games, with a double, triple, home run, and threeRBI. Junior Sandi Dengler was a perfect 3-3 in the second game.

“We had two really well executed games,” UK coach Beth Kirchner said. “It was alot of fun to get good pitching, excellent offense, and good defense for back-to-backgames.”

The Cats (20-23, 5-11 Southeastern Conference) resume SEC play Saturday, April 14,with a noon doubleheader against Eastern Division leader South Carolina.
