(Apr. 7, 2001) — Coach Guy Morriss praised the work of the Kentucky defense following a two and one-half hour practice Saturday, April 7, at the Nutter Training Center.

The practice was concluded with a one-hour scrimmage and the first- and second-team defensive units stopped the offensewithout a touchdown on eight of nine possessions. The defense also created a turnover when senior free safety Anthony Wajdaintercepted a pass that had been tipped by senior linebacker Jamal White.

“I don’t think the offense showed up the last couple of days. The defense turned up the heat on them,” Morriss said after thescrimmage. “On Monday and Wednesday (practices) I thought both sides executed pretty well, but Friday and today the offensedidn’t execute well. The offense just can’t show up and kick around the defense anymore.”

Redshirt freshman quarterback Shane Boyd directed the only touchdown drive against the first and second units, moving 70yards in seven plays. A key play in the drive was a 32-yard pass from Boyd to junior wide receiver Aaron Boone, setting up ChadScott’s eight-yard TD run.

On the day, Boyd completed 10 of 17 passes for 137 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Sophomore JaredLorenzen completed four of eight passes for 27 yards, with no TDs or interceptions. Lorenzen directed one drive to the seven-yardline, but was stifled by a penalty and a pair of incompletions.

Boone was the leading pass catcher with three receptions for 43 yards. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Tommy Cook caughttwo for 27 yards and senior WR Dougie Allen caught two for 26. Junior wide receiver Brad Pyatt caught one pass and turned it intoa 41-yard play with some excellent moves.

The third-team offenses and defenses also played a couple of series and quarterback Trey Barclay directed the third offense totouchdowns on both possessions. Junior running back Martez Johnson scored on a 65-yard run and Barclay tallied the other TD ona one-yard quarterback sneak.

Johnson led all rushers during the scrimmage with 96 yards on seven carries. Junior Artose Pinner had seven carries for 64yards, featuring a 54-yard run. Sophomore Chad Scott gained 19 yards on six carries, including one TD.

The Wildcats return to the practice field on Monday, April 9, at 2 p.m. at the Nutter Training Center. Another scrimmage isscheduled for April 14 and the Blue/White Spring Game will conclude spring practice on April 21.
