The University of Kentucky baseball team fell to its arch-rival Tennesseeby the score of 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium. With the loss,the Cats were swept by the visiting Volunteers for the first time since 1995.
UK (11-14, 2-7 SEC) never got on track against Tennessee starter PatrickHicklin, who picked up his second win by tossing a complete game shutout.Hicklin allowed only five hits while striking out seven.
UT improved to 24-3, 8-1 in the Southeastern Conference, and remained onegame ahead of South Carolina in the SEC Eastern Division standings.
The Vols got on the board with a run in the third on a sacrifice fly fromDan Wilson. UT added a run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
Solo home runs in the seventh inning by Chris Burke and Jeff Christensenupped the UT lead to 4-0 before the Vols added two additional runs in theninth on back-to-back home runs by Matt Sternberg and Stevie Daniel, makingthe final tally 6-0.
Despite pitching well, UK starter Mark Michael (2-3) was saddled with theloss. Michael went 7 innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, threeearned, while striking out four.
No Wildcat batter recorded more than one hit.
After a day off on Monday, UK will travel to Bowling Green on Tuesday foran intra-state battle with Western Kentucky University.
