OXFORD, Miss. Morgan Embry’s two-run, pinch-hit single in the eighth inning capped a Kentucky rally from a 6-1 deficit and delivered the Wildcats to a 7-6 win over Ole Miss in the rubber-match of a three-game Southeastern Conference series, Sunday afternoon at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
Reliever Mark Michael (2-2) pitched 6 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win, limiting the Rebels to one run on two hits and four walks, while striking out seven.
Seth Morris started the Wildcat comeback in the fourth with a lead-off home run to make it 6-2. Kentucky scored two runs in the fifth on a Beau Moore RBI single and a Vince Harrison sac-fly, then added another run in the seventh on Harrison’s RBI double to pull within 6-5.
After Caleb Brock grounded out to short to start the Kentucky eighth, Gordon Tyler singled and Jon Love walked to put runners on first and second. The runners then advanced on Cory Hahn’s ground out to second to set-up Embry’s game-winning hit.
Ole Miss put the winning run on base in the ninth as Matt Tolbert and Craig Nugen hit back-to-back one-out singles, however, Jon Hooker coaxed Burney Hutchinson to ground out into a game-ending double play.
Hooker pitched the ninth to earn his third save of the year.
Nathan Lyons (2-1) suffered the loss, walking the only batter in the eighth he faced.
Rebel starter Ronnie Goodwin allowed six runs on 10 hits and three walks in 7 1/3 innings to take a no decision.
Ole Miss scored a run in the first when Hutchinson doubled home Tolbert, who hit a lead-off triple. Spencer Preston tied the game with a lead-off home run in the top of the second, before the Rebels scored four runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning to chase starter Rob Corrado and build a 5-1 lead.
Both teams recorded 11 hits each.
