Using six pitchers and a host of substitutions, the University of Kentucky baseball team cruised by its intra-state rival EasternKentucky University, 12-1, on Wednesday, March 7, at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
For the second consecutive game, the Wildcat offense racked up double-digit hits en route to extending its season-long winningstreak to four games. Caleb Brock led the offensive barrage going 2-for-3 and collecting five RBI on the afternoon.
UK (6-7) scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning when shortstop Vince Harrison belted a mammoth homerun to dead center field.
The Cats added two runs in the second. With Gordon Tyler aboard, Brock smashed his first collegiate home run over the left fieldwall, giving UK a 3-0 lead.
After Cat starter Rob Corrado was lifted after four strong innings, EKU (5-5) scored its lone run of the game in the fifth inning.Chris Grynaviski doubled with two outs and later scored on an RBI single by Colonel leadoff man Kiley Vaughn.
The Wildcats offense would come alive in the fifth inning, posting five runs, all coming after two outs. Harrison singled to centerfield and scored on a triple by Seth Morris. Spencer Preston followed with single that drove home Morris. After Jeff Tolotti and GordonTyler had walked to load the bases, Brock knocked in all three runners with a double to left-center.
UK would tack-on four additional runs in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
Bryan Felkel pitched only one inning, but picked up his first win for the Wildcats. The UK bullpen was instrumental in the victory.In addition to Felkel, Mark Galvin, Shane Boyd, Seth Morris and closer Jon Hooker all registered one inning apiece.
Five Wildcats, Harrison, Morris, Preston, Tyler and Brock all recorded multiple-hit games.
Aaron Williams led the EKU attack with three hits.
The Wildcats open Southeastern Conference play on Friday, March 9, when they travel to Oxford, Miss., to take on the Ole MissRebels in a three-game series. Fridays game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST. Scott Wade is the scheduled starter for UK.
