The University of Kentucky got off to a solid start on day one of the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and FieldChampionships at the Nutter Field House on the campus of UK. The Wildcat women are in seventh place with 9.50 points, while themen are ninth with five points.

“For what we are capable of, this was a pretty good day,” Coach Don Weber said. “My only expectations are for us to competeup to our ability, and we are doing that.”

The Cats’ top point earner of the day was sophomore Janet Crawford in the women’s high jump. Crawford matched herfourth-place finish from a year ago with a leap of 5-06.00 to give UK five points. Other point earners included sophomore ThomasMorgan in the 3,000 meters with a sixth-place time of 8:15.13 and junior Bill Powers with a seventh-place finish in the weight throw witha heave of 58-02.50.

The women’s cause was enhanced by a sixth-place finish from sophomore Simidele Adeagbo in the long jump (19-09.75) andeighth-place from senior Shevan Threats (19-07.50).

In preliminary heats, freshman David Freeman gave UK its top finisher of the day. Freeman advanced to the finals of the 800meters with a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:50.18. Other qualifiers in the race were sophomore ChadJohnson with a season-best 1:50.52 and freshman James Doaty with a 1:51.19. Sophomore Hunter Spencer ran fourth in the mile in4:10.64 to qualify for the finals.

Freshman Elmetta Johnson ran an excellent 60-meter hurdles to qualify for the finals with a personal-best time of 8.57, whilefreshman Caity Phillips moved on to the finals in the mile by running a fourth-place time of 4:58.81.

Competition concludes on Sunday, Feb. 25, with the women’s weight throw kicking things off at 10 a.m. and the women’s1,600-meter relay closing out the festivities at approximately 5 p.m.
