TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Kentucky softball team defeated New Mexico State, 6-1, on Friday, Feb. 16, but dropped the second game of the University of Arizona Tournament to the University of the Pacific, 6-4. The Wildcats are now 2-4.

Against New Mexico State, Kentucky scored twice in the first inning. Lyndsey Angus blasted a triple to centerfield. After Leslie Kwiatkowski was hit by a pitch, and stole second base, she scored. Angie Dal Pozzo reached first base on an error to score the two Wildcats. In the third inning, Tiffany Kruse doubled to centerfield with Dal Pozzo on base to make the score 3-0. In the fourth inning, New Mexico State’s Mel Briggs scored the Aggies’ lone run.

In the fifth inning, Kwiatkowski tripled, then scored when Dal Pozzo reached base once again on an error. Kentucky wrapped up scoring in the seventh inning as Angus and Kwiatkowski both doubled, Kwiatkowski’s sending Angus home. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Kwiatkowski scored on a Kruse single. Kwiatkowski has six runs, four doubles and a triple for the season. Morgan Marr was the winning pitcher, holding New Mexico State to just four hits.

In the game against the Pacific, the Tigers scored in the first inning and built a 2-0 lead in the third. Kentucky came back in the fourth, pulling past the Tigers 3-2 after Jennifer Howland’s triple to right field capped the inning’s scoring by driving in Andy Eilertson.Pacific came back with four runs in the sixth.. Kruse’s first home run of the season accounted for the final score, as the Cats fell, 6-4.

On Saturday, the Wildcats take on Bowling Green State at 3 p.m. ET before facing the Arizona Wildcats at 5 p.m. ET at the University of Arizona’s Hillenbrand Stadium.
