Athens, Ga. – The fifth-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs proved to be too much for the Kentucky womens basketball team, defeatingthe young Wildcats, 91-58, in Stegeman Coliseum on Thursday.Freshman forward Stephanie Stoglin was the only player to ink double-digits for the Cats, dropping in 10 points, eight in the secondhalf. Freshman point guard Dasieka Hawthorne and sophomore Rita Adams followed with nine points each. Hawthorne knockeddown a career-tying three three-pointers. Leading scorer LaTonya McDole was held to seven points, but pulled down a team-highseven rebounds along with freshman forward Alvine Mendeng.
The Lady Dogs jumped out to a 45-29 lead at the half, as Kentucky could never find its scoring groove. The Cats, dropping theirfifth-straight conference game, (5-18, 1-10 Southeastern Conference) shot 34.9 percent from the floor, compared to UGAs 45.5percent for the game.
“We are much smaller than Georgia and they only held a 46-41 advantage on the boards,” UK Coach Bernadette Mattox. “Impleased with the way we fought to the end. We didnt give up and Im proud of them.”
Freshman forward Christi Thomas was difficult to control all night as Wildcat post players Helm, Jones and Mendeng fouled out withsix minutes left to play. Thomas scored a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds in 23 minutes while senior Kelly Miller added 15points of her own. Twin sister Coco Miller followed with 11. UGA hit 28-of-40 from the free throw line compared to UKs11-of-18.
Georgia (21-4, 9-2 SEC) leads the all-time series with Kentucky 21-8, including an 11-2 advantage in Athens.The Cats return home on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m., when they meet South Carolina for the second time in a seven-day span. Sundaysgame marks the sixth annual Take A Kid To the Game Day. Children under the age of 18 are admitted for free when accompaniedby an adult. All children can take place in interactive activities on the upper concourse in Memorial Coliseum at 1 p.m.
