(Feb. 14, 2001) — The Kentucky womens basketball team seeks its first win over Georgia in three tries and its first win in Athens since 1994, when it faces the fifth-ranked Lady Bulldogs on Thursday, February 15 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on College Sports Southeast.
The last time UK met Georgia in Stegeman Coliseum was 1998. Since that meeting, the Cats are 1-3 against the Lady Dogs, meeting them twice at home and twice in the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
UKs last win over UGA came on Feb. 7, 1999. UK upset No. 8 Georgia, 80-76, in Lexington, marking Coach Bernadette Mattoxs first win over a ranked opponent and first win over former coach and boss Andy Landers. It also marked UKs first win over Georgia since 1993.
“Traveling to Athens and playing in Stegeman Coliseum will be a new experience for all the players on the team,” Mattox said. “Its been two years since we played there and like all games in the conference, it will be tough. Weve done a good job this week limiting our turnovers and Im pleased with where we are right now.”
Unlike her players, Mattox will be very familiar with the Georgia campus. She played two seasons for current coach Andy Landers (1980-81) and was an assistant coach for the Lady Dogs from 1982-1990. She was UGAs first female All-American and Academic All-American. Mattox transferred to Georgia after playing under Landers at Roane State Community College in Tennessee. Landers took over the Georgia program in 1978.
Junior forward LaTonya McDole continues to be the Cats all-around force this season. She ranks in FIVE statistical categories in the SEC rankings and leads UK in scoring (12.6), rebounding (6.9) and steals (65).
Georgia leads the all-time series 20-8, including a 10-2 advantage when playing Athens. The Lady Dogs currently hold a three-game winning streak over the Cats after notching two wins last season, in Lexington (73-69) and in the second round of the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga (75-65). UGA also marginally defeated the Cats in the semi-finals of the SEC Tournament in 1999, 68-62.
Georgia is ranked No. 5 in both the Associated Press Poll and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. The Lady Dogs are 20-4 overall, 8-2 in the SEC after defeating South Carolina (92-55) and Mississippi State (78-74) last week. UGAs most recent loss came at the hands of No. 9 Florida on Feb. 1, 75-64.
After a week-long break from game action, Georgia hopes to keep its two-game win streak alive. Coco Miller, who leads the Lady Dogs in scoring with 17.0 ppg, poured in 25 points, including the 2,000th of her career, to lead UGA over South Carolina last Thursday night, 92-55. Twin sister Kelly Miller is the teams second leading scorer, averaging 16.0 ppg.
The Cats return home on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m., when they meet South Carolina for the second time in a seven-day span. Sundays game is the sixth annual Take A Kid To the Game Day. Children under the age of 18 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. All kids can take place in interactive activities on the upper concourse in Memorial Coliseum starting at 1 p.m.
