AMES, Iowa – Freshman James Doaty and senior Shevan Threats added their names to the list of University of Kentucky trackathletes who have provisionally qualified for the 2001 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with their performances at theIowa State Classic on Saturday, Feb. 10.
Doaty became UKs second NCAA double-qualifier with his career-best run in the 800 meters. He crossed the finish line witha third-place time of 1:49.90 to become the first Cat to break the 1:50 mark this season while moving up to third on the UK all-time800-meter list. On Friday, Doaty provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet as part of the school-record breaking distance medleyrelay team.
In the womens long jump, Threats won her first event of the indoor season with a season-best leap of 20-05.25. She now joinssophomore Simidele Adeagbo as NCAA provisional qualifiers in the event.
Other top performances for the men included another first-place finish and NCAA automatic-qualifying mark by freshman JeffChakouian in the shot put with a heave of 63-10.50. Sophomores Hunter Spencer and Jack Morgan earned personal-best times inthe mile, crossing the finish line in 4:06.09 and 4:11.81. Morgans brother Thomas also set a personal-best with a 1:52.76 in the 800meters.
On the womens side, freshman Caity Phillips also earned a personal-best in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.94, whileAdeagbo claimed fourth-place in the triple jump with a mark of 40-09.75.
The Cats will now take two weeks to prepare for the Southeastern Conference Championships which will be held in the friendlyconfines of the Nutter Field House on the UK campus. Action gets underway in the two-day event on Saturday, Feb. 24.
