The University of Kentucky women’s tennis doubles team of Brooke Skeen and LaurenRookledge breezed through the first three rounds of competition at the 2001 GeorgiaInvitational on Saturday, Jan. 20, to earn a spot in the semifinal round.
Skeen and Rookledge, the tournament’s No. 2 seed, received an opening round bye beforequickly disposing of Kansas State’s Alena Jecminkova and Eva Novotna 8-3 in the secondround. The Wildcat tandem went on to defeat Shan Liew and Libby Fletcher of Brenau 8-6 toadvance to the semifinal round.
The duo will face Tina Hojnik and Anne Nguyen of Georgia. This marks the secondconsecutive year the Skeen has played in the semifinals of the prestigious tournament. In2000 she finished as doubles runner-up in the tournament with partner Leigh Bradwell.
Three Cats also fell in the late rounds of the singles competition on Saturday. Bradwell,Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten all dropped matches to highly seeded opponents.
The Georgia Invitational will continue through Monday, Jan. 22.
