The University of Kentucky women’s tennis team turned in a solid day at the 2001 Georgia Invitational on Friday. Three Wildcats advanced through the first two rounds of competition to claim spots in the quarterfinals of the competitive tournament.
Junior Carolina Mayorga rolled past second-round opponent Eva Choe of Illinois, 6-3, 6-2, after receiving a first-round bye. Sophomores Leigh Bradwell and Sarah Witten also received opening round walkovers and went on to triumph in the next round. Bradwell defeated LSU’s Amy McIlhaney 6-2, 6-1, while Witten bested Tiffany Eklov of Illinois 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomores Amy Trefethen and Jill Buckley both advanced to the second round with victories, but were then downed by the tournament’s No.1 and No. 3 seeds respectively.
Doubles competition had just begun at deadline. Action will continue through the weekend with the finals taking place on Monday.
