The University of Kentucky men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams traveled to Baton Rouge, La., to take on the LSU Tigers and the Aggies of Texas A&M. Kentucky’s women’s team downed both LSU and Texas A&M, defeating LSU 128 to 114 and Texas A&M 150 to 93. On the men’s side, the Wildcats defeated LSU by a score of 134 to 109, but dropped to third-ranked Texas A&M by only nine points as the Aggies outscored the Cats 125 to 116.
For the 23rd-ranked men, Macon White commanded victory in the 200 freestyle, while Shaun Zitani took the top spot in the 50 freestyle. David Tweedie and Eddie Clement continued the Wildcat attack as Tweedie placed second in the 1,000 freestyle and Clement swam to second in the 200 individual medley. White came back to take the 500 freestyle, narrowly edging LSU’s Ross Buffington. Roger Watkins finished the winning trend with his victory in the 200 breaststroke. The UK men placed in the top three in every event except one.
The 23rd-ranked women’s squad came out strong starting the meet off by winning the 200 medley relay. In the first individual event, the 1,000 freestyle, Amanda Bourgeois and Melissa Olson packed a one-two punch taking the top two spots in the event. Bourgeois went on to win the 500 freestyle as well. Tracy Sullivan and Debra Hinsley went two-three in the 200 freestyle and Shawna Sechrist finished fourth. In the 50 freestyle the Cats again snagged the top spot as Jaime Siegele won the event. Siegele went on to take the 100 freestyle as well.
Melissa Olson, narrowly edged by Tiger Mandy Leach, took second in the 200 individual medley. Olson came back to win the 200 backstroke and combined with Wildcats Jenaca Pumphrey, Shawna Sechrist, and Sarah Carter to nearly sweep the event, but LSU’s Lindsey Mooney foiled the sweep by taking second. Kelli Stein and Kendra Trahan went one-two in the 200 breastroke to complete the individual events for the meet.
In diving, Carrie Knoeber placed third on the one-meter with a season-high score of 268.45. Sarah Fields recorded season-high scores on both the one- and three-meters as she scored a 247.70 on the one-meter and a 260.45 on the three-meter. Clayton Moss and Aaron Kirkpatrick roared through the men’s three-meter diving as they finished one-two. The men finished second and third, respectively, on the one-meter.
The women’s team will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 20, when they travel to face Arkansas and South Carolina at the University of Arkansas Natatorium at 11 a.m. ET. The women will re-team with the men on Saturday, Jan. 27, as the Wildcats take on Cincinnati at Cincinnati’s Laurence Pool at 1 p.m.
