University of Kentucky forward Jules Camara has released the following statement:
“I would like to apologize to the University of Kentucky, the fans of Kentucky basketball, my teammates, and the entireLexington community for the pain and embarrassment I caused last September. The arrest resulted in my suspension from thebasketball team under UK’s student-athlete policy.”
“I have decided not to continue with the appeal of my conviction. As I understand it, a successful appeal would only get me anew trial, and that is something that I do not want to put UK, my teammates, friends or myself through again. I want to act in the bestinterests of the team and help Coach Smith by bringing certainty to my status for the remainder of the season.”
“I am very happy that I decided to stay at UK. This is the right place for me. Under the revised UK policy, I will be able tokeep my scholarship and remain in school. I plan to use this year off to focus on my academic goals and to prepare myself to returnto the team a better person and a better basketball player.”
“I deeply appreciate the support that I have received. I would like to thank Coach Smith and the UK coaching staff, Mr. Ivy,the UK fans and my classmates and teammates for helping me through a very difficult time. I plan to repay their kindness andgenerosity by being there for them as they were for me.”
UK Coach Tubby Smith’s response:
“Jules’ decision not to appeal his conviction closes a very difficult chapter in his life. Since that time, he has done everything wehave asked, both off and on the court. We look forward to his return next season.”
