Hall, Scott Chosen Freshman All-America: Offensive tackle Antonio Hall and running back Chad Scott were named third-team Freshman All-America by The Sporting News.
Hall started every game at right tackle, protecting the “blind side” of lefthanded quarterback Jared Lorenzen, and was a key factor inUK’s improved offensive line play. Kentucky led the SEC in total offense with 445 yards per game. The Wildcats gave up only 22quarterback sacks fewest in the Hal Mumme era compared to 52 sacks a year ago. Kentucky’s rushing offense was up 35 yardsper game from the 1999 season.
This is Hall’s second national honor. Last week, he was chosen first-team True Freshman All-America by Rivals.com.
Scott totaled 872 rushing and receiving yards this season, more than any freshman running back in the SoutheasternConference. He led Kentucky in rushing with 611 yards on 130 carries, averaging 4.7 per attempt, with four touchdowns. He had apair of 100-yard games, including a season-high of 119 yards against Mississippi State. He also caught 34 passes for 261 yards.
Derek Smith Named All-SEC: Sophomore tight end Derek Smith was picked first-team All-Southeastern Conference by The Sporting News.
Smith led the Wildcats in pass receiving this season with 50 receptions for 716 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught apair of two-point conversions. He was a semifinalist for the John Mackey Award, which goes to the nation’s best tight end. Threeof his best games came against nationally ranked teams eight catches for 76 yards and two touchdowns in “The Swamp” at Florida;five for 108 yards against Georgia; and six for 102 yards vs. Mississippi State.
In addition to The Sporting News, Smith has been named first-team All-SEC by the Collegiate Sports Southeast cable TVnetwork and by the CollegeFootballNews.com Internet site.
Hall to Perform at UK Christmas Concert: Freshman offensive tackle Antonio Hall, a gifted singer and musician, will perform at the third-annual University of Kentucky Christmas Collage concert on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m. at the Singletary Center for the Arts on the UK campus.
Hall is a member of the UK Choristers, one of the groups that will perform at the concert. Additional performers include theUniversity Chorale, Women’s Choir, acoUstiKats, and Paws and Listen. The University Percussion Ensemble, Tuba/EuphoniumEnsemble, and UK Dance Ensemble round out the performance. Special guests include Schuyler Robinson on organ, Miles Oslandon saxophone, and the Calvary Baptist Church Handbell Choir.
Conducting the Christmas Collage concert is Dr. Jeff Johnson, Director of Choral Activities at the University. The concert willhighlight Christmas musical traditions around the world. Tickets are $12 for adults and senior citizens and $6 for students andchildren.
Spike Dykes Quote on John Goodner:
New UK defensive coordinator John Goodner worked with Texas Tech coachSpike Dykes from 1993-99, including the last five seasons as Dykes’ defensive coordinator. Texas Tech did not have a losingseason in Goodner’s seven years there and the Red Raiders played in five bowl games.
Here are Dykes’ thoughts on his former defensive coordinator:
“John is about as good a coach as I’ve ever been around,” Dykes said. “He has a fantastic background. I don’t know if I’ve been around a coach who is a better student of the game than John. His teams always played well and overachieved. The kids really enjoyed playing for him – John will do a great job for you.”
“John’s wife, Karen, is a tremendous asset. She loves the game and shares his enthusiasm for coaching. A great part of his strength is Karen.”
Michaels to Represent UK at SEC Legends Dinner: Former Wildcat All-American Lou Michaels will represent UK at the annual Southeastern Conference “Living Legends” Dinner on Fri. Dec. 1.
The “Living Legends” dinner is held in conjunction with the SEC Football Championship Game and honors a former player from each of the 12 league schools. SEC legends honored at this year’s gathering will include: Dwight Stephenson, Alabama (1977-79); Stacey Danley, Auburn (1987-90); Ronnie Caveness, Arkansas (1962-64); John Reaves, Florida (1969-71); Kevin Butler, Georgia (1981-84); Lou Michaels, Kentucky (1955-57); Roy Winston, LSU (1959-61); Robert Khayat, Ole Miss (1957-59); Kent Hull, Mississippi State (1979-82); Harold Green, South Carolina (1986-89); Steve DeLong, Tennessee (1962-64); Herb Rich, Vanderbilt (1946-49).
Michaels played tackle, kicker, and punter at UK from 1955-57. He was a first-team All-American as a junior and senior. He was chosen the SEC Player of the Year in 1957 and finished fourth in the balloting for the Heisman Trophy. He played in the National Football League from 1958-71 with the Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Colts, and Green Bay Packers. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
Previous UK representatives at the “Living Legend” dinners, beginning in 1993, have included George Blanda, Vito “Babe” Parilli, Derrick Ramsey, Wallace “Wah Wah” Jones, Jerry Claiborne, Bob Gain, and Steve Meilinger.
SCAPA Display Includes Commonwealth Stadium: Eighth-grade students from Lexington’s School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCAPA) have an art display of gingerbread houses at Lexington Green from Nov. 27 through Dec. 5. Among the gingerbread structures is a replica of Commonwealth Stadium. On Dec. 5, the stadium replica and other structures will be auctioned for the Volunteers for America, an organization that benefits homeless families.
