UK Advances Further in NCAA Play Than Any Other UK Team in History

DALLAS – The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team’s great postseason run came to an end, 3-1, to sixth-seededSouthern Methodist in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 25. The Cats finish the season as the only men’s soccer team in school history to advance past the first round.

The Mustangs (19-4-0) scored the game-winning goal in the 76th minute when Mohamed Fahim, the team’s leadingscorer, took a pass that he blasted toward the top of the goal. UK goalkeeper Brian O’Leary got a hand on the ball, but ithit the crossbar and fell down into the goal, giving SMU a 2-1 lead.

The Cats (11-9-2) battled hard and put SMU in the position to need the second goal after junior Ilkka Jantti notchedhis third goal of the season off of a J.D. Stephenson free kick at the 73:27 mark to tie the game at one. However, Fahimput the Mustangs back in front less than three minutes later.

With less than a minute remaining in the match, the Cats had a free kick near the SMU goal for a chance to tie thegame once again, and they pulled O’Leary to give them an additional attacker. However, the ball was cleared out andFahim raced down and scored in the open net to set the final margin.
