The University of Kentucky swimming and diving teams continued their strong performances on the second day of the Texas A & M Invitational. The meet will conclude Saturday, Nov. 18, with the 100 freestyle, 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 butterfly, and 200 breaststroke as well as the 400 freestyle relay.
The men’s performance was capped off by Roger Watkins’ record breaking 100 breaststroke. He swam to a time of 55.86, breaking his own school record as well as becoming a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championship meet and earning him second place in the event. Shaun Zitani placed third in the 100 butterfly, while Macon White swam to a third place finish in the 200 freestyle.
Diver Clayton Moss once again took a victory in the three-meter with a score of 553.85. Fellow diver Aaron Kirkpatrick placed third in the three-meter diving to a score of 538.25.
The women placed second in the 200 medley relay, but the most exciting performance was the women’s 800 freestyle relay where the Wildcats took a commanding lead early, eventually winning the race. Melissa Olson won her second event of the weekend as she took the 400 individual medley; her time of 4:22.02 earning her an NCAA Championship consideration. Carolyn Rader won her second event of the meet as well as she was victorious in the 200 freestyle and earned an NCAA consideration with her time of 1:50.28.
Kelli Stein finished second in the 100 breaststroke, while Debra Hinsley swam to a second place finish in the 100 butterfly and Amanda Bourgeois placed second in the 200 freestyle. Jaime Siegele placed third in the 100 backstroke to finish the day’s individual events. Divers Carrie Knoeber and Kelli Frost packed a punch as they finished second and third, respectively, in the three-meter.
