(Nov. 9, 2000) — For the second consecutive year, the University of Kentucky men’s soccer team dominated the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll with 12 student-athletes earning the honor, the league announced on November 9.
UK placed one more athlete than last year on this season’s list, with nine repeats from 1999. Lee Baker, Jason Bell, Giovani Fernandes, Rob Frey, Ilkka Jantti, Chris McAlpine, Brian O’Leary, Michael Stickler, and Marc Theriault repeated the honor from last season, while Eddie Davis, Rob Mayer and Antti Peltonen made the list for the first time. This is the third consecutive honor for Baker, Bell and Stickler.
This season alone, the Cats also have had four individuals honored as the PNC Bank Student-Athlete of the Week. Jantti, McAlpine and Chris McDaniel each were selected during the season, while Fernandes will receive the award on Nov. 14.
To be eligible for the SEC Honor Roll, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 grade-point average for either the past year or for their career, must be a sophomore or higher in academic classification and must have 24 semester hours countable toward a degree. The 2000 list is based on academic credentials form the 1999-2000 academic year.
