The University of Kentucky junior varsity football team shook off a sub-par performance against Hargrave Military Academy last week to drop the Campbellsville Tigers, 44-13, on Monday, Oct. 30, at Commonwealth Stadium.
The Cats (2-3) got on the board first when sophomore Edgar Gantt (West Hampton, N.J.) caught a 17-yd passfrom freshman Matt Casey (Shelbyville, Ky.) and rumbled into the end zone for the 7-0 lead. The drive was the longest ofthe night as UK moved 86 yards in 11 plays.
The Tigers answered just before the end of the quarter when Marquis Cunningham ran nine yards for the equalizing score. However, UK answered quickly.
On the ensuing kickoff, sophomore Noah Gibson (Ft. Thomas, Ky.) took the CU kickoff and returned it 63 yards tothe Tiger 26-yardline. On the third play of the series, Casey found Gantt again for a 22-yard score to push UK to a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Cats added two more scores in the second quarter as Casey rushed for a TD and passed for another, again toGantt.
Campbellsville played tough defense throughout the third quarter, but UK found pay dirt one more time when Casey connected with freshman Jess Cronen (Louisville, Ky.) for his fourth TD pass of the night, putting UK up 35-7.
Just before the end of the third stanza, the Tigers traveled 78 yards in nine plays for the score, but the kick failed, to pull within 22 points. The Cats responded quickly with Casey’s fifth touchdown pass of the night, and second to Cronen, to give UK a commanding 42-13 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the game. UK closed out the scoring with a safety with just over four minutes remaining.
Casey finished the night with 304 yards on 31-19 passing with five TDs through the air and one rushing, while Gantt hauled in eight receptions for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Cronen added 34 yards on five receptions with two touchdowns.
The Cats held the Tigers to only 250 net yards in the game while gaining 337 of their own. The defense also forced CU to punt seven times and held them to only 4-14 on third downs.
