COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team fell to 18th-ranked Ohio State, 0-3, on Friday, Oct.27, on the first day of play in the Ohio State Nike Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Cats (8-8-0) got behind early as the Buckeyes (8-3-4) found the open net in only the first minute. Justin Cook scored the goal from 10 yards out off of a Todd Grossnickle pass to take the 1-0 lead.
UK then regrouped and was able to maintain possession of the ball and keep it in the OSU end of the field for much of the first half, but the Cats were unable to capitalize on their chances. They gave up two more goals in the opening half (in the 33rd and 37th minutes) to set the final margin.
In the second half, the game got much more physical, but UK increased its defensive intensity to hold theBuckeyes scoreless the remainder of the way. However, it could not find the goal, either.
For the match, the Cats out-shot OSU 14-11, with nine coming in the second stanza, while earning five more corner kicks than the host. Sophomores Chris McDaniel, Brian Mitts and J.D. Stephenson led UK with three shots each.
The Cats return to action against No. 13 Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 29, at noon EST in their second game of theClassic.
