The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team travels to Huntington, W.Va., to face Marshall on Sunday, Oct. 22, in its final Mid-American Conference game. Action gets underway at 3 p.m.
The Cats (8-6-0, 4-1-0 MAC) are coming off of a thrilling overtime victory over league-foe Bowling Green on Friday night.UK had to play a man down in the extra period after a red-card ejection, but the Cats held tough as senior Tyler Cook netted thegame-winner in the fifth minute of the extra stanza.
Marshall (11-3-1, 3-2-0 MAC) won its last time out against intrastate-rival West Virginia, but just over a week ago fell toBowling Green, 1-0. Earlier this season, the Thundering Herd fell 0-2 to Northern Illinois, a team to which UK handed a 4-0 defeat.Marshall’s biggest win of the season came in a 3-2 overtime decision over Akron.
UM is led by sophomore Byron Carmichael. His 15 goals in 2000 are the most by any player in the MAC, twice as many asthe next player, teammate Chris Donovan. Carmichael is 10th in the country in goals per game and leads the team in points with 33,while Donovan is second on the team with 19 points.
This is a very pivotal contest for both teams, with postseason implications. A Cat win over Marshall would keep them in firstplace in the MAC with Akron. Akron would win a tie-breaker if it wins its last two league contests, but a tie or a loss would give UKthe outright title. If Marshall defeats UK and Akron loses, the Thundering Herd would tie Akron for first place and win a tiebreakerby virtue of its victory over the Zips.
