UK Wins Second Consecutive Match to Move Back to .500
In an extremely physical contest, a foul call in the box gave the University of Kentucky mens soccer team the only opportunitythey would need to put away Western Kentucky, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 24, at the UK Soccer Complex.
Sophomore Chris McDaniel broke away from his defender and was tripped up just outside of the WKU goal to earn UK apenalty kick at the 59:10 mark of a scoreless match. Junior Marc Theriault, in only his second game after a four-game injury spell, blasted the PK past the Hilltoppers goalkeeper for the 1-0 win.
Both teams were unable to get much going offensively as they played on a muddy field from a downpour midway through thefirst half. The Wildcats (4-4-0) outshot the Hilltoppers (2-6-0) 9-8, while missing a number of opportunities.
“We played well in first half,” head coach Ian Collins said, “but didn’t finish enough. If we had finished our chances the gamewould have been over early. I give them (WKU) a lot of credit. And I give our back four credit for overcoming a size disadvantageand playing good defense.”
UK senior goalkeeper Brian O’Leary notched his second shutout of the season and 15th of his career. He tallied three keysaves to stave off WKU attacks.
The Cats open Mid-American Conference play when they host Western Michigan on Friday, Sept. 29. Action at the UKSoccer Complex gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
