(Sept. 3, 2000) — The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team (3-1, 1-0) defeated Northwestern (0-3) on September 3 in its second game in the University of Minnesota Tournament in Minneapolis, Minn.
Jen Reese scored Kentucky’s first goal in the 30th minute from 10 yards out, off assists from Susie Ledzianowski and Annie Gage. The next two goals in the game belonged to the Wildcats as Aimee Brown and Kate Qually both scored. Brown’s goal came in the 42nd minute as she dribbled into the box and shot from 15 yards out. Qually followed in the 63rd minute, shooting straight from 14 yards off a Keri Boyce assist. Though Northwestern scored the next goal, Boyce and Ledzianowksi came back in the 67th and 85th minutes, respectively, to finish the game for the Cats. Boyce’s goal was the product of a Kara McCue assist as she too dribbled into the box and blasted the ball to the far side of the net. Ledzianowski’s goal came off a Boyce assist, scoring from eight yards.
UK goalkeeper Beth Wells had two saves on the day and combined with the strong Kentucky defense to hold Northwestern to only one goal. Back-up goalkeeper Jo Fletcher debuted for the Cats, recording one save.
Northwestern’s lone goal came in the 66th minute as Kristen Pearce shot the ball past Wells’ hands. Janelle Harwood led Northwestern with four shots.
Kentucky outshot Northwestern 24-14 and had five corner kicks in comparison to Northwestern’s four. Kentucky now leads the series 2-1.
The Cats will play host to Utah State on Friday, Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex, part of a doubleheader with the men’s team, who will face Vanderbilt at 8 p.m.
