UK falls to Georgetown, defeats William & Mary

The University of Kentucky volleyball team fell in three games to Georgetown University to lose their season opener on Friday, Sept. 1 in the University of Virginia Tournament. This was the first meeting between the two schools.

In the match, Georgetown (1-0) out-hit the Cats .167 to .094 and beat the Wildcats in three games, going 16-14, 15-12 and 15-8. Kiran Gill lead the Hoyas in kills with 13, while Yulia Vtyurina followed with eight. Gill and Lauren Warner both had three service aces for the match.

Kentucky (0-1) was led by senior Melissa Kracht, who posted 15 kills and 31 total attempts. April Barnhorst also had a strong game for the Cats, with eight kills an 19 total attempts. Megan Weiskircher got on the board with the game’s only block solo and Candace Cogan recorded 11 digs for the match.

Following Kentucky’s defeat, the team rallied in the second game, defeating William and Mary. This is the first meeting between these two schools as well. The match went to five games, with Kentucky winning the first game 15-10, the fourth game 14-13 and the fifth game 15-8. The Tribe won the second and third matches, 15-9 and 18-16, respectively.April Barnhorst led the Cats in kills with 16 and Stacey Wallace led digs with 13. The hitting percentage for the Cats for the match was .131, while William and Mary posted a percentage of 1.08. Leading the Tribe in kills was Tara Tobias with 17 as she got a double-double with her 16 digs.The Wildcats will next see action on Saturday, Sept. 2 as they take host Virginia at University Hall at 11:30 am.
