The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will travel to Minneapolis, Minn., this weekend to take part in the University of Minnesota Tournament. The Wildcats (2-0, 1-0) face Minnesota (0-1) on Friday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. ET at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The series is tied at 1-1, after Kentucky won last year’s contest, 2-0.
“This is our first challenge on the road, and we hope to improve from the first weekend of play,” UK coach Warren Lipka said.
Minnesota was shut out by Nebraska, 4-0, on Friday, Aug. 25. Senior Laurie Seidl and juniors Samantha Meyers and Juli Montgomery will lead the Gophers. Seidl is in the top 10 on the Minnesota all-time list in career points, career goals, and career assists. Minnesota was 12-8 overall and 6-4 in the Big Ten last season.
UK defeated Southeastern Conference foe Vanderbilt, 3-2, in two overtimes last Sunday at the UK Soccer Complex. Sophomore Keri Boyce scored the game-winning goal for the Wildcats, 19 seconds into the second sudden-death overtime. She also scored earlier in the game, her first two goals of the season. In the Cats’ shutout over Cincinnati on Aug. 25, Boyce recorded an assist. Her play in both games garnered her SEC Player of the Week honors. She also was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week for her efforts.
Kentucky will face Northwestern on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 1 p.m. ET in its second game of the tournament.
