Wildcats Practice Twice on Saturday: Following Saturday afternoon’s practice, Kentucky defensive coordinator Mike Majorspoke optimistically about what he’s seen from his defensive players during the first two days of workouts.
“I think we’re very much improved in speed and athletic skill,” Major said. “We can do more things athletically than before and we’rebigger and stronger.
“The great thing is the numbers (of players available). At every position, we have some reserves we can put in and get the job done.Look at the defensive tackles, for instance. I think we’re going to have at least five quality players at those positions. That’s more thanwe’ve had.”
Major has been the UK defensive coordinator since arriving with Coach Hal Mumme in 1997. Major calls his unit the “Black Flag”defense, giving his players the mindset of “never surrender.” After taking over a defensive squad that was very low in number ofplayers, the team defensive statistics have improved each season. The Wildcats gave up 32.9 points per game in 1997. That figure improved to 30.9 points allowed in 1998, then lowered again to29.4 points per game last season. Yards allowed per game has shown similar progress, going from 392.3 yards allowed per game in1997, to 386.l in 1998, to 373.7 last season. The Wildcats have Fans’ Day on Sunday. They return to the practice field on Monday and have three practices scheduled.
