Men win close one with victory in final relay of day.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 21, 2000) — The UK men’s and women’s swimming anddiving teams scored two exciting victories over the visiting LSU TigersFriday afternoon at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
On the men’s side, the Cats had to win the 200-yard freestyle relay, thefinal event of the meet, in order to win the dual meet. The relay team ofShaun Zitani, David Tweedie, Macon White and Aaron Workman heldoff a charging LSU relay squad, edging the Tigers by a final score of122-121. The win was the Cats’ (3-2) first victory over LSU in a dualmeet in school history.
Zitani claimed two individual events for UK, the 50 and 100 freestyles.Zitani, who has not lost a 50 freestyle race this season, swam his besttime of the year, 20.34.
Other event winners for the UK men include Eddie Clement (200 I.M.),Macon White (200 freestyle), David Tweedie (1,000 freestyle), anddiver Clayton Moss (3-meter).
The UK women’s team scored a 124-118 win over the Tigers byfinishing first and second in the 200 freestyle relay to end the meet.
UK’s Kelley Miller out-touched LSU’s Johanna Hill by less thanthree-tenths of a second, keeping the Cats’ (6-0) undefeated in dualmeets this season.
Junior standout Melissa Olson won the 1,000 freestyle and the 200 I.M.and finished second in the 100 backstroke for UK.
Senior Annabel Kosten claimed the 50 and 100 freestyles and sophomore Carolyn Rader wonthe 500 freestyle.
“Both the men and women’s meet tonight were very exciting and it was good to see the kidsreally step up to the challenge,” UK coach Gary Conelly said.
“With the Southeastern Conference Championships just around the corner, we need to build asmuch momentum going into the meet as possible.” UK returns to the water at 1 p.m. onSaturday, Jan. 29, when the Cats play host to Cincinnati at the Lancaster Aquatic Center.
