The Kentucky women’s soccer team defeated 10th-ranked Wisconsin, 2-1,and tied Marquette, 1-1, over the weekend to win the 1997 WisconsinInvitational Soccer Tournament.

UK defender Allison Peppers was named the tournament’s Defensive MVP.She was joined on the all-Tournament team by Kim LaBelle, Jen Reese,Carrie Kuhnell and Jen McMaster.

The Wildcats began the tournament Friday against the host Badgers. LaBellescored what proved to be the game-winner in the 74th minute, outdribblingtwo defenders before lofting the ball over the Wisconsin goalkeeper.

Wisconsin got on the board first, scoring in the 13th minute, but UK battledback to level the scores at 1-1 when Carrie Staber scored from a JenniferMcMaster cross in the 20th minute. In what turned out to be thetournament’s championship game, Kentucky faced Marquette Sundayafternoon. Uk got on the board first when McMaster scored off an assistfrom Annie Gage. However, Marquette would equalize just 13 minutes fromfull time, with regulation ending 1-1.

Both teams had opportunities to score,but neither found the back of the net in the extra frame. After two overtimeperiods, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
