The UK men’s soccer team recorded its third shutout of the year defeatingBelmont 3-0 at the UK Soccer Complex, Sunday.
All three of Kentucky,s goals came within a 13-minute span in the secondhalf as both teams struggled to score the first 45 minutes. Senior RickDengelegi netted a 10-yard shot off a Matt Wilkerson assist to open up thescoring for the Wildcats at the 66:46 mark. Defender Lee Baker scored hisfirst goal of the season on a penalty kick to put Kentucky up 2-0 six minuteslater. At the 79:32 mark, freshman Matt McDevitt caught the Belmontgoalkeeper off-guard and put a 12-yard shot into the open net to round outthe scoring for UK.
Kentucky (6-3-1) had 11 shots for the game and held the Bruins to only oneshot the entire second half.
“I thought our effort was outstanding,” UK head coach Ian Collins said. “Wewere gritty and tough, and we just wore Belmont down. That’s what I wantto see.”
Senior Jamie Schuer said that after losing to Indiana last week, the teamcame back and practiced hard for three days. “We had a big letdown atIndiana,” he said. “We wanted to come out, fight really hard and make thewrongs right. It was a real team effort today.” Belmont falls to 3-6 with theloss.
“I’m really happy with our mental toughness,” Collins said. “We had our pridehurt at Indiana and we came out today and played really hard. This isdefinitely a tough group.”
Kentucky faces its first Mid-American Conference opponent on Friday, Oct.3, as it travels to Western Michigan.
