LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky men’s soccer team won theUniversity of Kentucky Invitational Tournament by shutting out ClevelandState 1-0.
Sophomore Jason Bell scored the game’s only goal just 20 seconds beforehalftime on a tip-in for the Cats.
UK held the Vikings to only four shot attempts and recorded its secondstraight shut-out victory. The Wildcats defeated Bradley 3-0 in their firstmatch of the tournament yesterday.
“To win two shutouts on our home field is a great feeling,” Bell said. “One ofour goals this year is not to lose at home, so we’ll try to build on this.”
Head coach Ian Collins said he was happy with his team’s defensethroughout the tournament.
“We beat two good quality teams in one weekend, and we didn’t give upmany scoring opportunities against them,” Collins said.
UK players Chris Villamil, Lee Baker, Todd Stonestreet and Chris Westwere named to the UKIT All-Tournament Team.
With the win, UK improves to 3-1 on the season.
In the first match of the day, Bradley defeated UNC-Asheville 3-2 in twoovertime periods.
Kentucky next faces Cincinnati at the UK Soccer Complex Wednesday at7:30 p.m.
The UK women’s soccer team won the Wisconsin Invitational by tyingMarquette 1-1 in two overtimes. The Cats were awarded the trophy in atiebreaker. Sophomore Jen McMaster scored for UK 27 minutes into thematch against the Golden Eagles.
In its first tournament match on Friday, UK defeated Wisconsin 2-1.
Sophomore Allison Peppers was named the Defensive MVP, whilegoalkeeper Carrie Kuhnell, forward Jen McMaster, and midfielders KimLaBelle and Jen Reese were named to the All-Tournament Team.
