IU’s counterattack proves to be too much for Kentucky.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Oct. 20, 1999) — The University ofKentucky dropped a hard-fought decision totop-ranked Indiana on Wednesday, falling 4-2 to theHoosiers in Bloomington.

Despite playing in the attacking half for the majority of the match, IU’scounterattack and set plays were too much for the Cats. Indiana’s potentcounterattack put the Hoosiers up 2-0 early in the first half before UK’sJason Bell found the nets in the 40th minute to close the margin to 2-1 at thebreak.

After IU scored early in the second to push the score to 3-1, the Catsappeared to close the margin once again, but a Kentucky goal wasdisallowed by referee Ricardo Salazar.

Kentucky’s Lee Baker netted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute to pull theCats within one at 3-2, but IU struck back just minutes later to ice theHoosier win.

The two goals scored by UK are the most IU has allowed in any match in1999 and just the seventh and eighth goals they have surrendered on theseason.

“We’re certainly disappointed,” UK Coach Ian Collins said. “I thought weplayed well enough to win, but IU’s counterattack was deadly.”

UK returns to the pitch on Sunday, when the Cats host Louisville at the UKSoccer Complex.
